Syme makes timely debut Plan to

The city council is looking at reducing the limit to 30km/h along parts of the Uni-Cycle cycleway, which will include a neighbourhood greenway through Fendalton. The cycleway runs from the university through to the central city with reductions proposed for Hinau, Miro and Ngahere Sts. The lowered limit is to allow for a safe shared space between bicycles and vehicles. THAT RUGBY factory known as Christchurch Boys’ High produced another moment to remember on Saturday. Rico Syme, who made his UC Championship debut from the bench helped seal a late win over St Andrew’s with a brilliant piece of footwork and acceleration. The school posted an equally sharply taken photo opportunity on its Facebook site (see page 1) of the moment Syme started his 50m run which enabled his team to draw level and give first-five Alex Harford an easy conversion to win the match. The UC Championship is an amazing breeding ground for young rugby talent and no doubt Syme’s debut will put a little bit of pressure on the CBHS incumbent. That of course is no bad thing whatever the sporting code is. – Barry Clarke

Lower speed limit plan •From page 1 At the last city council meeting ViaStrada senior traffic engineer and transport planner Glen Koorey said they should consider lowing speed limits across the city. The former Canterbury University transport engineering senior lecturer said the changes would improve motorist, cyclist and pedestrian safety. “There’s a lot of crashes where the Glen Koorey likelihood or the severity could have been reduced greatly if you got the speeds down. We know from the evidence that you drop the speeds from 50km/h to 40km/h, 40km/h to 30km/h, the risk of serious injury or fatality goes down dramatically.” Dr Koorey said in Hamilton, speed limits in school zones had been reduced. News Call to remove pesky trees A PETITION calling for 19 silver birch trees to be removed from a Halswell street now has the city council asking for feedback on removing the healthy trees. The Halswell-HornbyRiccarton Community Board has received a petition from 23 households in Rempstone Drive and Astor Pl requesting the removal of the trees located on Rempstone Drive. The reasons stated for the removal were both health concerns and nuisance value. The community board is sympathetic to these health concerns, however, the city council has a policy on tree and human health which requires the tree to be the sole cause of a health condition. The nuisance value of the silver birch trees relates to fallen debris and the effect this has on surrounding properties and infrastructure. City council staff said the silver birch trees appear to be in good health and there are no safety concerns that would initiate their removal. However, due to the petition the city council is now asking the community to have their input

Free service for hard-of-hearing in Hornby PEOPLE experiencing hearing loss have a new service available. Hearing therapist Bernadette Collins is offering a free clinic in Hornby. Funded by the Ministry of Health, the independent service is designed to help people manage the impact of hearing loss on daily life. Ms Collins says the clinics offer more than just a free hearing test. “We evaluate each person’s hearing needs and help them come up with a plan so they can achieve better hearing, whether that’s at work, socialising or at home with family and whānau.” She helps clients develop strategies for managing hearing aids and also provides information about technology such as amplified phones and smoke alarm systems to improve independence for people living with hearing impairment. Ms Collins will continue to visit Heartlands Service Centre every fourth Friday of the month as well. The new service will run every second Friday at Hope Presbyterian Centre. Medbury’s fundraiser for Syria PUPILS FROM Medbury School went running to raise money for Syria. As part of the school’s community service programme, the pupils ran a 12-hour fundraising initiative last week to support

the World Vision 40 Hour Famine. Modelled on the Relay for Life, the walk went from 6am until 6pm and raised $22,000 to help support the refugee crisis in Syria. All year 1 to 8 pupils,

together with staff members, participated in the event. Friends and family were invited to participate and the pupils were also encouraged to walk or run outside of school hours. Amos Pilgrim, Medbury’s

head of community service, with the support of year 8 house leaders, including Alexander Speight, Jasper Johnson, William Law and Ben Kuruvilla, all pitched in to help organise the fundraiser.

Skate parks in place by January HALSWELL WILL have two new skate parks built by January. After three years of planning, consultation and design, the Halswell-Riccarton Community Board approved the projects at its meeting last Tuesday. The new skate parks will be located at Halswell Domain and in the new Halswell sub-division Knights Stream. They will cost $344,605 and $350,000 respectively. The city council had already budgeted for one skate park in Halswell when last year it decided to add another in Knights Stream. The second park will be funded using development contributions. Development contributions are fees paid by developers to help the city council pay for the infrastructure needed as a result of the project. Community consultation earlier this year showed overwhelming support for both facilities, with about 70 per cent of 147 responses in favour. About 20 per cent were against the Halswell Domain skate park and 14 per cent were against Knights Stream. Some nearby residents were

concerned about anti-social behaviour, noise and the location of the parks. Submitters asked that CCTV cameras be installed, but the city council said there needed to be exceptional circumstances for it to install cameras at parks. A city council staff report said there was no evidence to suggest anti-social behaviour arose from skate parks. “Skate and recreation parks provide a sense of place for the community. Evidence indicates

that the lack of things for young people to do is more likely to lead to undesirable behaviour,” city council staff said. Community board chairman Mike Mora said the city council had engaged a noise consultant to conduct an acoustic report based on the two designs and it was deemed both skate parks would comply with noise limits. He said the skate parks would be great facilities for children and families in the suburb. Construction is expected to start in September.

Businesses influence decision to keep car parks By Julia Evans FENDALTON business owners are relieved that parking outside their premises won’t be removed. Elizabeth Fry, owner of The Cook Shop on Holmwood Rd, said she’s thrilled the Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board did not approve a new pedestrian island that would take away six parking spaces. “We’re pleased it’s being maintained,” Mrs Fry said. If the parking was revoked, she said she would have lost her walkin customer base. “It’ll kill us . . . the reality is it’s putting all these businesses in real danger of having to close their doors,” Mrs Fry said. But the board went against the city council’s recommendation and moved a motion to keep the intersection as it is. The board’s decision came after Mrs Fry organised a petition of 336 signatures opposing the loss of parking. Ilam MP Gerry Brownlee, board chairman David Cartwright and city councillor Jamie Gough met with Mrs Fry in May to address concerns raised by the petition.

Women honoured

EVEN WITH more than 76,000 members worldwide, many people haven’t heard of this group. But recently the Soroptimist International of Christchurch celebrated the long service members over the last 68 years. Special recognition was given to Maureen Lough, who was president of the club during the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes. Certificates were presented to those who had given over 10 and 20 years of service. And certificates, badges and a bouquet flowers presented to the four members whose combined service topped 327 years. “The friendliness, comradeship and the willingness to participate in the variety of fundraising opportunities presented to us, enable us to support worthy causes,” current president Yvonne Flitcroft said. The 2017 Young Totara Award, which recognises positive youth achievements in the community, was also awarded on the night, and went to Jay Maniapoto from Hornby High School. HORNBY HIGH School students are among those to reap the benefits of a $15,000 donation. The Mazda Foundation has donated the money to the wider community with $3000 earmarked for Hornby. The students are planning to replant native bush in Victoria Park that was destroyed in the Port Hills Fires. The initiative is one of a number of Dingle Foundation Canterbury’s programmes to encourage students to give some-

thing back to their community. “The programme is designed to support the young people in their venture and assist with the restoration of the Port Hills after the devastating fires last year,” foundation regional manager, Noeline Allan, said. She said students want to get involved in repairing the land and planing alongside city council rangers. Russley School also received a donation of $3091. The school incorporates Lego and robots in learning to

encourage students to learn the basics of robot programming using a computer and Lego robots. It will use the money to purchase four Lego EV3 Robots to update and enhance the programme for current and future students. A team from the school will also be competing in this year’s Robofest competition and received an extra $213.49 funding from foundation to go towards jackets and medals for winners.

CBHS keep top spot with win over St Andrew’s By Andrew King CHRISTCHURCH Boys’ High dug deep to stay top of the table with a two-point victory over close rival St Andrew’s on Saturday. A blazing run from replacement fullback Rico Syme, who debuted off the bench with 20min to go, drew the match 2323 with a 68th minute try. Alex Harford then kicked the conversion to snatch a 25-23 victory at the death, helping CBHS to retain their top spot on the UC Championship table. Syme said when he saw he only had one player between him and the try line, he was confident he would go all the way. “I knew that if I got on the out-

side of him I was going to score. Since it was the winning try it felt pretty unreal,” he said. St Andrew’s were reduced to 14 players when fullback Tom Anderson was sent behind the sticks for a high tackle in the 66th minute leaving an overlap in the backline. Manager Rob Smith said it was a real testament to playing for the full 70min. He said it was part of the culture in the squad to play right up until the final whistle and past it if need be. “He [Syme] put the foot down at the right time, didn’t he? t the adjoining physio clinic, the four qualified physiotherapists specialise in dealing with chronic pain, such as headaches, earache, toothache, and facial and jaw pain. As physiotherapist Ietje van Stolk explains, when our muscles tighten this can refer pain to many of the areas around the face and head. Dehydration can be the catalyst for tightening the neck muscle (SCM), which causes pain in the

ear, forehead and around the eye and jaw joint areas. Tightening of the temporalis muscle can refer pain to the teeth, which can be confusing when the person visits the dentist to have it checked and the dentist can’t find a reason for the recurring pain. Teeth grinding at night and teeth clenching during the day, are also a major cause of muscle tightening. Physiotherapy treatment for these problems, is based on deactivating

the ‘trigger points’ through handson massage therapy, to relax the muscles, which is the least invasive and a very effective form of treatment. Dry needling is another technique used for muscle relaxation, but is only used with the client’s consent, Ietje says. “We release the muscles to give immediate relief and at the same time work on the cause. For example, we have a feedback headband that is worn at night to help people to learn not to clench their teeth while they’re asleep. We also work

on the client’s cervical or neck part of the spine, where overuse can cause muscles to tighten, creating pain.” Teaching self-management of stress is an important aspect of the clinic’s treatment, as well as teaching breathing techniques, which go hand in hand with managing stress. The gym is open to the public for regular specialised classes for people with ailments such as diabetes, osteoporosis, vascular problems, and those who face difficulties following a stroke.

Directions

Combine flour with salt in large mixing bowl. Cut in butter with pastry blender or two knives until mixture is size of small peas. Stir in just enough cold water to form a dough. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate until firm, about 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 200 deg C. Grease four (11cm) individual tart pans or a larger pan. Divide dough into four portions and press onto bottom and up sides of prepared pans. Line with

Learning first aid is not only a part of ensuring a safe work place, but also an integral part of our engagement with the wider community. We all learn the necessary skills to ensure that in times of emergency we are able to assist our work colleagues, but are we able to take these skills home, into the community or on to the sports field? not all work places are the same and the injury risk for each place can be wide and variable. The office attended by administrators does not carry the same risk as those people working with heavy machinery, or perhaps at some distance from a regular ambulance service. it is therefore essential that you pick the right first aid course to suit all of your activities – both professional and social. take, for example, an office worker who does not have a high risk work environment and whose concern might be to ensure that they can deal with minor cuts and superficial injuries, or the ability to perform effective CPr. These skills can be achieved on a course of eight hours duration and would generally fit into low to medium risk area. But take this same person on to a sports field either as a spectator or player when a higher level injury occurs. The eight hour course covering unit standards 6402 and 6401 (or 26551 and 26552) does not cover head neck and spinal injuries, eye injuries,

hypothermia and poisonings. The majority of injuries occur outside of the work place, in fact one in three injuries occurs in the home, making it the most common place for injuries to happen. new Zealand children are twice as likely to die through injury as children who live in australia. They mostly die as a result of motor vehicles accidents or falls in the home. fatalities from leisure and sport are not far behind those in the workplace. The wider 12 hour course teaches the additional unit standard 6400 and provides a wide knowledge base for medium to high risk environments. This course covers many of the skills required to deal with the most common injuries, such as falls (which can result in head, neck and spinal injuries) and dealing with complex scenes such as motor vehicle accidents. if you are not sure on the course best suited to your needs, ask your accredited first aid training provider. They can explain the course content and give you options that will best suit your needs. Look beyond the workplace and consider your family and your location. Check that you have a good quality first aid kit that is up-to-date with replenished items, and that everyone knows where it is located.

Village offers independent living in resort-style environment One couple who have enjoyed independent living at Anthony Wilding for two and a half years now is Ken and Beverley Haworth. Realising their own home was too big for their needs, in agreement with their family – a daughter and two sons – they had made the decision to move to a retirement village. Living in Upper Riccarton, they wanted to stay on the same side of town. “We looked at one or two places, but we liked it here,” says Ken. “It was the atmosphere, it had a welcoming feel about it.” They put their names down for a townhouse, and then they got the call they were waiting for and were able to move in. Their two-bedroom townhouse is “cosy for two people”, Beverley says. “We have been very happy since coming here. The staff have been good – it’s all positive.” They take part in a variety of activities, including the Triple A fitness classes, and bowls for Ken, plus they volunteer in other areas of the village. This includes helping in the hospital, while Ken serves the drinks at happy hour and Beverley helps out with the entertainment. She also lends a hand at the interdenominational church service every week. They both enjoy the entertainment and activities, and say there is a lot to choose from. One thing Beverley says she particularly enjoys at Anthony Wilding is being with people of the same age group as herself and Ken. “They have the same sense of humour and have had similar experiences. We like mixing with people of our age, with similar interests and backgrounds.” Another positive aspect of the village is the way the residents look out for each other, they say. And if help is needed from the staff, that’s available immediately. “I also find that the staff don’t treat us as being more mature. We share things with the staff and they share things. There seems Ken and Beverley Haworth enjoy the company of the other to be no separation – residents at Anthony Wilding.

we’re all in together,” Beverley says. “Residents really enjoy life at the village with so much on offer here, and so many friends to be made,” Claire says. “We have a townhouse available now which is set up and available for people to view.” Anthony Wilding is a very friendly village and people seem very happy here, Claire says, and there is a good mix of male and female residents. “For shopping and outings it’s close to

Halswell and Lincoln, and the new shops at Wigram, and there’s a bus stop right outside the village with a good bus service.” As residents’ needs change, they can move from their townhouse to assisted living in a serviced apartment where they can receive assistance with housekeeping and meals, and resthome, hospital and dementia care is also available and on-site, so they have the benefit of the full continuum of care provided by the Anthony Wilding team.

There were three finalists, and Anthony Wilding was named the winner at the annual conference held at the Wigram Airforce Museum on June 2. Choosing the right heat pump for your home

Whether it be a new build, or a retrofit, most homes include at least one heat pump, if not a whole heating solution. They can provide cheap, clean heat and are much more convenient than a log burner as you just need to press a button. But how do you decide what is best? Choosing the right sized heat pump is key to ensuring optimum comfort levels. Every situation varies and it is therefore important to get professional advice from heat pump experts. The range varies from wall mounted high walls, floor mounted systems, multi systems, ceiling cassettes, right through to ducted central heating systems allowing you to have a very discreet way of heating your whole home to a constant temperature throughout. Firstly, you must select a heat pump that is suitable for the size of the space you wish to heat. Usually a site visit is the best way to ascertain this. Not only is the size of the area taken into consideration but also, insulation, building orientation, windows and ceiling space. There are a wide range of heat pumps available with different heating outputs so it is important to select the correct size for your requirements that will handle the job but not be unnecessarily overpowered. Secondly, the location of your heat pump is also extremely important. The cheapest installation is a back to back where the outdoor unit is positioned directly behind the indoor unit however this is not necessarily always the best option. It is vital that the indoor unit is positioned in a place that will not be

constantly blowing on you. Also important, is the location of the outdoor unit. Most people do not want their outdoor unit sitting directly in their outdoor entertaining area or right outside their bedroom window. Choose a brand you can trust. Many brands have come and gone over the years but there are a number of manufacturers who provide reputable and reliable products. All brands vary in their energy efficiency, quietness of systems and price, so it depends on your application as to which will be most suitable. Major brands such as Panasonic, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi, Daikin, Toshiba and Hitachi are all reliable brands backed up by good technical after sales service. The facts about home ventilation Balanced Pressure vs Positive Pressure Under the New Zealand Building Code, all buildings, including residential, need to be suitably ventilated, either with opening windows or forced ventilation. Clause G4.1 states: “The objective of this provision is to safeguard people from illness or loss of amenity due to lack of fresh air.” There are many benefits to forced, or mechanical, ventilation over opening windows, including warmth, security, reduction of outside noises and reduction of condensation. Traditional domestic ventilation systems are ‘positive pressure’. They bring air in from outside via the roof space and force the stale air out through gaps around windows and doors. The incoming air from these systems has to be heated or cooled to keep the house warm in winter or cool in summer. The Smooth-Air HEX390 is a ‘balanced pressure’ system. It extracts air from the house and at the same time brings in fresh air. These two streams of air pass through a heat exchanger, which warms incoming air in winter and cools in summer if air conditioning is being used.
