lower speed limits around varsity STREETS around Canterbury University could have speed limits lowered. The city council is looking at reducing the limit to 30km/h along parts of the Uni-Cycle cycleway, which will include a neighbourhood greenway through Fendalton. The cycleway runs from the university through to the central city with reductions proposed for Hinau, Miro and Ngahere Sts. The lowered limit is to allow for a safe shared space between bicycles and vehicles. The speed limit would also be supported by the design which includes various traffic calming measures to further encourage slower speeds. •Turn to page 3

DEBUT: Rico Syme made a grand entrance into the UC Championship when he scored a 68th minute try to help Christchurch Boys’ High to a 25-23 victory over St Andrew’s on Saturday. After being included on the reserves bench from the second XV for the first time, the replacement fullback made a dazzling 50m dash to level the scores in the dying minutes. Alex Harford calmly kicked the conversion to win the game and keep them top of the table after eight rounds. •Read more, page 13 •Editor’s note, page 2

Tuesday June 20 2017 FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK

THAT RUGBY factory known as Christchurch Boys’ High produced another moment to remember on Saturday. Rico Syme, who made his UC Championship debut from the bench helped seal a late win over St Andrew’s with a brilliant piece of footwork and acceleration. The school posted an equally sharply taken photo opportunity on its Facebook site (see page 1) of the moment Syme started his 50m run which enabled his team to draw level and give first-five Alex Harford an easy conversion to win the match. The UC Championship is an amazing breeding ground for young rugby talent and no doubt Syme’s debut will put a little bit of pressure on the CBHS incumbent. That of course is no bad thing whatever the sporting code is. – Barry Clarke

“I really am so happy here.”

“EVERYONE KNOWS MY MOLLY.”

When Bev found out she was able to bring her mini schnauzer Molly to her Summerset retirement village, she was thrilled. “Molly is very important to me, I wouldn’t have wanted to make the move without her.” After being at Summerset for only a few months, Bev was surprised at how quickly she settled into village life. She really likes the feeling that she’s secure and that help is always at hand should she need it. She says that living at Summerset has given her a great sense of relief, “Now I can relax.”

Lower speed limit plan •From page 1 At the last city council meeting ViaStrada senior traffic engineer and transport planner Glen Koorey said they should consider lowing speed limits across the city. The former Canterbury University transport engineering senior lecturer said the changes would improve motorist, cyclist and pedestrian safety. “There’s a lot of crashes where the Glen Koorey likelihood or the severity could have been reduced greatly if you got the speeds down. We know from the evidence that you drop the speeds from 50km/h to 40km/h, 40km/h to 30km/h, the risk of serious injury or fatality goes down dramatically.” Dr Koorey said in Hamilton, speed limits in school zones had been reduced. He said that could be done here. •Residents can make submissions opposing or supporting the limit changes on the city council’s website

Your Local Views Readers respond to the article in Western News about plans to disconnect Wi-Fi at the Riccarton Rd Metro bus lounge to curb anti-social behaviour Nic Davies – They just need to be more strict with the no good wasters. If you are there for no reason after 45 min then you are told to move on. So if you are seen harassing anyone you are arrested and banned from the area.

Tony Williams – Put free Wi-Fi at the police station, let’s see if they all flock there. Nelson Yorke – I don’t think it’s going to make a difference turning the Wi-Fi off. Usually, I’ve seen them there with music blearing from their cellphones using a Bluetooth speaker. One occasion there was one on a bike using a megaphone. Corey Humm – Just like putting a tram line in through hack circle and blasting emos with classical music didn’t stop us from hanging around back in my teens. Adam Vincent – If it worked, you’d have the same situation as the no loitering bylaw previously proposed. Sure you might move them away from

Tania Salm – Would it help to figure out why they feel they need to meet up there and why it is they have nothing better to do with their time and take it from there? Ask them. the bus exchange, but they’d just regroup somewhere else. This doesn’t do anything to address why these people are there and acting as they are doing in the first place. Jacinta Roosing – Only have it on from 7am until 7pm. But I think if the people have nothing better to do, get them to sweep the floors or clean the windows.

Nichola Tyson – That was my biggest concern when free Wi-Fi became available in New Brighton Mall, it has been okay so far as far as I know probably due to more appealing covered spaces having free Wi-Fi . . . some of the local Spark hot spots have been an issue though. News Call to remove pesky trees A PETITION calling for 19 silver birch trees to be removed from a Halswell street now has the city council asking for feedback on removing the healthy trees. The Halswell-HornbyRiccarton Community Board has received a petition from 23 households in Rempstone Drive and Astor Pl requesting the removal of the trees located on Rempstone Drive. The reasons stated for the removal were both health concerns and nuisance value. The community board is sympathetic to these health concerns, however, the city council has a policy on tree and human health which requires the tree to be the sole cause of a health condition. The nuisance value of the silver birch trees relates to fallen debris and the effect this has on surrounding properties and infrastructure. City council staff said the silver birch trees appear to be in good health and there are no safety concerns that would initiate their removal. However, due to the petition the city council is now asking the community to have their input

into the possible removal of the trees. Submissions are open until the end of the month. Following consultation a report will be presented to the community board, which will include the community feedback, to assist in making a decision on

the removal of the trees. There is no budget for the removal and replanting of healthy trees, so if the removal was approved this work would need to be programmed. Residents who presented at the community board meeting indicated support to help fund the

replacement of these trees, however, this was not unanimous from signatories of the petition. •Go to https://www.ccc. govt.nz/the-council/consultations-and-submissions/ haveyoursay/show/41 to make a submission.

Medbury’s fundraiser for Syria PUPILS FROM Medbury School went running to raise money for Syria. As part of the school’s community service programme, the pupils ran a 12-hour fundraising initiative last week to support

together with staff members, participated in the event. Friends and family were invited to participate and the pupils were also encouraged to walk or run outside of school hours. Amos Pilgrim, Medbury’s

head of community service, with the support of year 8 house leaders, including Alexander Speight, Jasper Johnson, William Law and Ben Kuruvilla, all pitched in to help organise the fundraiser.

Skate parks in place by January HALSWELL WILL have two new skate parks built by January. After three years of planning, consultation and design, the Halswell-Riccarton Community Board approved the projects at its meeting last Tuesday. The new skate parks will be located at Halswell Domain and in the new Halswell sub-division Knights Stream. They will cost $344,605 and $350,000 respectively. The city council had already budgeted for one skate park in Halswell when last year it decided to add another in Knights Stream. The second park will be funded using development contributions. Development contributions are fees paid by developers to help the city council pay for the infrastructure needed as a result of the project. Community consultation earlier this year showed overwhelming support for both facilities, with about 70 per cent of 147 responses in favour. About 20 per cent were against the Halswell Domain skate park and 14 per cent were against Knights Stream. Some nearby residents were

concerned about anti-social behaviour, noise and the location of the parks. Submitters asked that CCTV cameras be installed, but the city council said there needed to be exceptional circumstances for it to install cameras at parks. A city council staff report said there was no evidence to suggest anti-social behaviour arose from skate parks. “Skate and recreation parks provide a sense of place for the community. Evidence indicates

that the lack of things for young people to do is more likely to lead to undesirable behaviour,” city council staff said. Community board chairman Mike Mora said the city council had engaged a noise consultant to conduct an acoustic report based on the two designs and it was deemed both skate parks would comply with noise limits. He said the skate parks would be great facilities for children and families in the suburb. Construction is expected to start in September.

Businesses influence decision to keep car parks By Julia Evans FENDALTON business owners are relieved that parking outside their premises won’t be removed. Elizabeth Fry, owner of The Cook Shop on Holmwood Rd, said she’s thrilled the Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board did not approve a new pedestrian island that would take away six parking spaces. “We’re pleased it’s being maintained,” Mrs Fry said. If the parking was revoked, she said she would have lost her walkin customer base. “It’ll kill us . . . the reality is it’s putting all these businesses in real danger of having to close their doors,” Mrs Fry said. But the board went against the city council’s recommendation and moved a motion to keep the intersection as it is. The board’s decision came after Mrs Fry organised a petition of 336 signatures opposing the loss of parking. Ilam MP Gerry Brownlee, board chairman David Cartwright and city councillor Jamie Gough met with Mrs Fry in May to address concerns raised by the petition.

EVEN WITH more than 76,000 members worldwide, many people haven’t heard of this group. But recently the Soroptimist International of Christchurch celebrated the long service members over the last 68 years. Special recognition was given to Maureen Lough, who was president of the club during the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes. Certificates were presented to those who had given over 10 and 20 years of service. And certificates, badges and a bouquet flowers presented to the four members whose combined service topped 327 years. “The friendliness, comradeship and the willingness to participate in the variety of fundraising opportunities presented to us, enable us to support worthy causes,” current president Yvonne Flitcroft said. Awards for Hornby employees NINE EMPLOYEES at Hornby businesses were honoured with Pride of Workmanship awards last week, for going the extra mile. The Rotary Club of Hornby presented the awards at its Pride of Workmanship evening at the Hornby Working Men’s Club on Wednesday, to recognise the pride and extra effort recipients put into their jobs. The nine recipients included Amir Rezanejad of R A Shearing, Allan Usherwood of Canterbury Caravan Court, Emma Hinton of Farmlands, and three Fulton Hogan employees – Pat Rogers, Grant

Butt and Pam Keepa. Three people from schools in the area received the awards – Suzanne Cassidy from Hornby Primary School, Judy Jackson from Yaldhurst Model School, and Patricia Fanning from South Hornby School. The 2017 Young Totara Award, which recognises positive youth achievements in the community, was also awarded on the night, and went to Jay Maniapoto from Hornby High School. Hornby Rotary President Ian Hodgetts said he was very pleased with the calibre of the awardees. “It is a great way to honour staff who work really

hard to make Hornby businesses successful,” he said. The awards were presented by Wigram MP Megan Woods, who said the awards recognised the effort employees put into making Hornby great. Hard working Hornby employees were rewarded for their efforts and received their Rotary awards from MP Megan Woods. Nominations for the 2018 awards will be open in April next year, and all businesses in the Hornby area are eligible to take part. Students operate business for charity By Julia Evans POP FOR Hope is a new student-run business raising money for Starship. Year 12 Middleton Grange School students Hannah Brown, Rachael Winder, Olivia Sandes, Coco Yan and Pud Dangsirirat are selling a unique to New Zealand product to help you stop dropping your phone – pop sockets. And all of their proceeds will be going to Starship Children’s Hospital. “They can be popped up and provide a grip to stop you from dropping your phone. When they are not being used they pop down and look like a fashionable sticker on your phone,” Pop for

HORNBY HIGH School students are among those to reap the benefits of a $15,000 donation. The Mazda Foundation has donated the money to the wider community with $3000 earmarked for Hornby. The students are planning to replant native bush in Victoria Park that was destroyed in the Port Hills Fires. The initiative is one of a number of Dingle Foundation Canterbury’s programmes to encourage students to give some-

thing back to their community. “The programme is designed to support the young people in their venture and assist with the restoration of the Port Hills after the devastating fires last year,” foundation regional manager, Noeline Allan, said. She said students want to get involved in repairing the land and planing alongside city council rangers. Russley School also received a donation of $3091. The school incorporates Lego and robots in learning to

encourage students to learn the basics of robot programming using a computer and Lego robots. It will use the money to purchase four Lego EV3 Robots to update and enhance the programme for current and future students. A team from the school will also be competing in this year’s Robofest competition and received an extra $213.49 funding from foundation to go towards jackets and medals for winners.

ST THOMAS under-13 A cracked the tonne against Christchurch on Saturday. The scored ended 103-0 after the Middlepark Rd boys ran in 17 tries and kicked nine conversions. Coach Steve Hart took some of the stronger players off just after halftime, played four forwards in the backline and offered the opposing coach the chance to end

the game early. In junior rugby, the “mercy rule” applies after the game gets past a 55 point gap, but they wanted to play on. “They wanted to continue and good on them,” Hart said. The team is undefeated this season and Hart said the future for St Thomas rugby is looking good. “Build it from the bottom, that’s what we are trying to do,” he said.

CBHS keep top spot with win over St Andrew’s By Andrew King CHRISTCHURCH Boys’ High dug deep to stay top of the table with a two-point victory over close rival St Andrew’s on Saturday. A blazing run from replacement fullback Rico Syme, who debuted off the bench with 20min to go, drew the match 2323 with a 68th minute try. Alex Harford then kicked the conversion to snatch a 25-23 victory at the death, helping CBHS to retain their top spot on the UC Championship table. Syme said when he saw he only had one player between him and the try line, he was confident he would go all the way. “I knew that if I got on the out-

side of him I was going to score. Since it was the winning try it felt pretty unreal,” he said. St Andrew’s were reduced to 14 players when fullback Tom Anderson was sent behind the sticks for a high tackle in the 66th minute leaving an overlap in the backline. Manager Rob Smith said it was a real testament to playing for the full 70min. He said it was part of the culture in the squad to play right up until the final whistle and past it if need be. “He [Syme] put the foot down at the right time, didn’t he? It is really great to see the boys keep going after it right up until the final minutes,” Smith said. In other Saturday games, St

Bede’s were thrashed by Nelson College 62-17, while Burnside had a tough day at the office against Timaru Boys’ High losing 66-5. St Thomas will look to bounce back after a 24-32 loss to CBHS in round 7 when they take on Roncalli today. Attack coach Paul Burton said they have been happy with the past month’s results, they may not be wins but they are heading in the right direction he said. “We will look to continue our improvement, stick to our game plans and look for consistent performances,” he said. He said the boys are excited to play today. The game will be played at Middlepark Rd at 12.45pm.

HEALTH & AWARENESS

Headaches,

facial and jaw pain

Physical Sense Gym & Physio, located in Colombo Street Sydenham, focuses both on helping people stay physically fit and healthy, and helping people to overcome various health problems.

A

t the adjoining physio clinic, the four qualified physiotherapists specialise in dealing with chronic pain, such as headaches, earache, toothache, and facial and jaw pain. As physiotherapist Ietje van Stolk explains, when our muscles tighten this can refer pain to many of the areas around the face and head. Dehydration can be the catalyst for tightening the neck muscle (SCM), which causes pain in the

ear, forehead and around the eye and jaw joint areas. Tightening of the temporalis muscle can refer pain to the teeth, which can be confusing when the person visits the dentist to have it checked and the dentist can’t find a reason for the recurring pain. Teeth grinding at night and teeth clenching during the day, are also a major cause of muscle tightening. Physiotherapy treatment for these problems, is based on deactivating

the ‘trigger points’ through handson massage therapy, to relax the muscles, which is the least invasive and a very effective form of treatment. Dry needling is another technique used for muscle relaxation, but is only used with the client’s consent, Ietje says. “We release the muscles to give immediate relief and at the same time work on the cause. For example, we have a feedback headband that is worn at night to help people to learn not to clench their teeth while they’re asleep. We also work

on the client’s cervical or neck part of the spine, where overuse can cause muscles to tighten, creating pain.” Teaching self-management of stress is an important aspect of the clinic’s treatment, as well as teaching breathing techniques, which go hand in hand with managing stress. The gym is open to the public for regular specialised classes for people with ailments such as diabetes, osteoporosis, vascular problems, and those who face difficulties following a stroke.

Physical Sense Gym and Physio is located at 300 Colombo Street, Sydenham. The Blue Line Bus stops in front of the door and there is ample parking. To enquire about specialised exercise classes or physiotherapy treatment, phone 377-2577 or visit www.triggerpoints.co.nz

Schools ready for battle of Suva St 11-0 hammering of Rangiora High last week, but Stanton said they cannot read too much into that. “Building back-to-back performances is the key for us at the moment. That and keeping a clean sheet,” he said. Riccarton High were tripped up by St Andrew’s last week 7-0, leaving them ninth on the table, while Middleton Grange sits above them in eighth. Both teams are equal on points but Middleton Grange has the superior goal difference. Nearby St Thomas will look to stay king of the mountain when they take on third-placed Lincoln

By Andrew King BILLED AS another battle of Suva St, Middleton Grange will take on Riccarton High in the Connetics first XI football competition tomorrow night. Originally the battle was reserved for the schools’ rugby teams when they faced each other, but now the football teams want in as well, and they get their chance at the Christchurch Football Centre at 5.45pm. “It is a friendly rivalry, but a rivalry nonetheless,” Middleton Grange coach Isaac Stanton said. Middleton Grange will be feeling good after their

tomorrow. They retained the Connetics Shield and their No 1 position after a 3-1 win over Burnside last week. Lincoln will want the shield back after losing it to Middleton Grange in the final round of pool play in last year’s competition. Burnside and Christchurch Boys’ High will be looking to take points from each other when they face-off at 4pm. CBHS ground out a 1-0 victory over close rivals St Bede’s last week, with goalkeeper Josh Reid keeping a clean sheet for the Straven Rd team pushing them into fifth on the table.

Fans meet their netball heroes ST MARGARET’S College netballer Caitlynne Hill got to meet her favourite Mainland Tactix players on Wednesday night. Caitlynne, 13, along with Isabella Cosgrove, 10, of Hoon Hay, won the opportunity to meet the team captains and highfive each of the players when they were called onto centre court at the start of the Tactix match against the Southern Steel. They won the opportunity through the ANZ Future Captains competition. Caitlynne, who has been playing for five years, was excited before the game to meet her heroes and watch them play. “My favourite part was high-fiving the players,” she said.

Loving home guaranteed for your hall table

The Nurse Maude Hospice Shops are a well-known feature in Christchurch since the first hospice shop opened in Merivale nine years ago. Not quite so well-known, however, is Maudes on Trade Me. While the Hospice Shops sell clothing Maudes on Trade Me sells everything from antiques to sporting and household items. “If it’s still in good condition but you no longer want it, have room for it or will never use it again you can raise money for the Nurse Maude Hospice by donating it to us,” says Sue Bramwell, general manager marketing at Nurse Maude. While smaller pieces can be left for Maudes on Trade Me at any of the Nurse Maude

Hospice Shops it is sometimes possible for larger or bulk items to be picked up. “Just give us a call on 375 4643 or email us at trademe.volunteers@nursemaude.org. nz first if you have large items and we can let you know where in Merivale to drop them off or whether we’re able to pick them up” says Bramwell. “Unfortunately we can’t take beds, mattresses or televisions, but we can take almost everything else in good condition.” “Maudes on Trade Me helps make it possible for patients and their families to receive care and support free of charge at the Nurse Maude Hospice so they can focus on what matters rather than having to worry about how they’re going to pay for that care.”

Book Buddies Saturday, 10.30-11.30am Do you enjoy reading? Do you fancy trying something new? Would you like to share your thoughts about books? Do you want to read more? Are you unsure what to read next? Bookbuddies is a book group for eight to 11-year-olds that runs every Saturday morning between May 20 and July 1. Each week has a different theme, chosen by participants. The group is ideal for those who want to read more, are unsure what to read next and who enjoy talking about books. All abilities are welcome, just take along your enthusiasm. Free entry, Te Hāpua Halswell Centre, 341 Halswell Rd

Learning first aid is not only a part of ensuring a safe work place, but also an integral part of our engagement with the wider community. We all learn the necessary skills to ensure that in times of emergency we are able to assist our work colleagues, but are we able to take these skills home, into the community or on to the sports field? not all work places are the same and the injury risk for each place can be wide and variable. The office attended by administrators does not carry the same risk as those people working with heavy machinery, or perhaps at some distance from a regular ambulance service. it is therefore essential that you pick the right first aid course to suit all of your activities – both professional and social. take, for example, an office worker who does not have a high risk work environment and whose concern might be to ensure that they can deal with minor cuts and superficial injuries, or the ability to perform effective CPr. These skills can be achieved on a course of eight hours duration and would generally fit into low to medium risk area. But take this same person on to a sports field either as a spectator or player when a higher level injury occurs. The eight hour course covering unit standards 6402 and 6401 (or 26551 and 26552) does not cover head neck and spinal injuries, eye injuries,

hypothermia and poisonings. The majority of injuries occur outside of the work place, in fact one in three injuries occurs in the home, making it the most common place for injuries to happen. new Zealand children are twice as likely to die through injury as children who live in australia. They mostly die as a result of motor vehicles accidents or falls in the home. fatalities from leisure and sport are not far behind those in the workplace. The wider 12 hour course teaches the additional unit standard 6400 and provides a wide knowledge base for medium to high risk environments. This course covers many of the skills required to deal with the most common injuries, such as falls (which can result in head, neck and spinal injuries) and dealing with complex scenes such as motor vehicle accidents. if you are not sure on the course best suited to your needs, ask your accredited first aid training provider. They can explain the course content and give you options that will best suit your needs. Look beyond the workplace and consider your family and your location. Check that you have a good quality first aid kit that is up-to-date with replenished items, and that everyone knows where it is located.

RYMAN HEALTHCARE

Village offers independent living in resort-style environment One couple who have enjoyed independent living at Anthony Wilding for two and a half years now is Ken and Beverley Haworth. Realising their own home was too big for their needs, in agreement with their family – a daughter and two sons – they had made the decision to move to a retirement village. Living in Upper Riccarton, they wanted to stay on the same side of town. “We looked at one or two places, but we liked it here,” says Ken. “It was the atmosphere, it had a welcoming feel about it.” They put their names down for a townhouse, and then they got the call they were waiting for and were able to move in. Their two-bedroom townhouse is “cosy for two people”, Beverley says. “We have been very happy since coming here. The staff have been good – it’s all positive.” They take part in a variety of activities, including the Triple A fitness classes, and bowls for Ken, plus they volunteer in other areas of the village. This includes helping in the hospital, while Ken serves the drinks at happy hour and Beverley helps out with the entertainment. She also lends a hand at the interdenominational church service every week. They both enjoy the entertainment and activities, and say there is a lot to choose from. One thing Beverley says she particularly enjoys at Anthony Wilding is being with people of the same age group as herself and Ken. “They have the same sense of humour and have had similar experiences. We like mixing with people of our age, with similar interests and backgrounds.” Another positive aspect of the village is the way the residents look out for each other, they say. And if help is needed from the staff, that’s available immediately. “I also find that the staff don’t treat us as being more mature. We share things with the staff and they share things. There seems Ken and Beverley Haworth enjoy the company of the other to be no separation – residents at Anthony Wilding.

Beautiful gardens feature throughout the village grounds.

we’re all in together,” Beverley says. “Residents really enjoy life at the village with so much on offer here, and so many friends to be made,” Claire says. “We have a townhouse available now which is set up and available for people to view.” Anthony Wilding is a very friendly village and people seem very happy here, Claire says, and there is a good mix of male and female residents. “For shopping and outings it’s close to

Halswell and Lincoln, and the new shops at Wigram, and there’s a bus stop right outside the village with a good bus service.” As residents’ needs change, they can move from their townhouse to assisted living in a serviced apartment where they can receive assistance with housekeeping and meals, and resthome, hospital and dementia care is also available and on-site, so they have the benefit of the full continuum of care provided by the Anthony Wilding team.

Award-winning village Anthony Wilding Retirement Village recently received the award for Ryman Village of the Year for 2017, out of the 31 villages in New Zealand and Australia. There were three finalists, and Anthony Wilding was named the winner at the annual conference held at the Wigram Airforce Museum on June 2. The villages are judged on a range of criteria including their results from residents’, staff and relatives’ surveys and the standard of care provided by the staff.

Village manager Diana Hanafin, left, clinical manager Jeannie Sales and sales advisor Claire Poulsen display the Ryman Village of the Year Award.

Townhouse available now! Enjoy your own modern home with resort-style facilities right on your doorstep! For more information phone Claire on 338 7696 5 Corbett Cres, Aidanfield 6896

For residents living in the well-appointed townhouses at Anthony Wilding Retirement Village in Halswell, the benefits of having total independence are coupled with the opportunity to enjoy all the resort-style facilities the village offers. The village’s bowling green, heated swimming pool and spa, gymnasium, beauty and hairdressing salon and wellstocked library are all available to enjoy at their leisure. In addition, they can join in the many activities, events and outings provided. Sales advisor Claire Poulsen says, “There’s always something happening. For example, we have housie, happy hours, guest speakers, and lots of entertainment. Actress Jennifer Ward-Lealand and Janice Grey, Bob Heinz and Mike Kine (jazz group) will be here in July. Then at the end of July we will be having an art exhibition in conjunction with Arts Canterbury.” Residents are given a monthly calendar listing all the upcoming activities, so they can plan what they might like to do. Activities include the exclusive Ryman Triple A exercise programme, which is run twice a week, with programmes tailored for Anthony Wilding residents’ differing levels of health and mobility. There is also line dancing, cards, aquafit, church services and more, so all interests are catered for. Residents can come along for regular outings, and while many independent residents have their own car, they are always welcome to go on the village van for shopping and meals out, Claire says. They can also purchase meals in the village dining room from the new Ryman Delicious menu.

FOCUS ON HEALTH

Natural product improves joint health For many of us, as we grow older our joints start to become stiff, sore and swollen, reducing mobility and quality of life. Most of these joint problems are caused by a lack of cartilage or damage to the cartilage, which is the soft, spongy material between the moving bones. The body continually produces cartilage, but factors like digestive and health issues, and not enough of the right nutrients in the diet, slow its production. If the cartilage wears away more quickly than it is replaced, the bone ends can start rubbing together, causing reduced joint movement, pain, swelling and inflammation of the joint. Generally, the joints with the most use or stress show problems first, but eventually other joints may show problems too. Luckily, certain nutrients are known to support and stimulate cartilage production. Pure Vitality is a small West Coast company, where they are committed to producing effective, natural, life-changing health supplements. While most joint care products on the market are very similar, Pure Vitality wants their products to be the most effective. Their new Joint Vitality product contains scientifically researched, high-potency natural ingredients to provide a multipronged approach to joint health. As well as a full therapeutic dose of the more common glucosamine and chondroitin, Joint Vitality contains a concentrated deer antler velvet extract to help stimulate healing. Another unique ingredient is joint fluid or mega-potent hyaluronic acid. This has been shown in clinical trials to be more effective than glucosamine and chondroitin. Joint Vitality also contains enhanced absorption turmeric extract, as well as the highest- potency extract of boswellia available to reduce inflammation, swelling and pain, and speed joint recovery. The formula also provides antioxidants from grape seed extract to support cellular joint health, and vitamin D3, zinc, boron,

manganese, copper and selenium, all critical to optimum joint health. This comprehensive formula is designed to provide fast, lasting results. It is recommended to take three capsules daily with food for the first box or two to obtain the maximum benefits. One box of 60 capsules is $49.90. Further information is available from Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy, 110 Seaview Road, New Brighton, phone 3885757. We are Always Happy to Help!

McKenzie Lifestyle Village McKenzie Lifestyle Village is in the final stages of completion. There are still great sites available and we also have a number of affordable villas ready for immediate occupation. Our beautiful Leisure Centre was opened last year and the pools, gymnasium and library and lounge area are in use daily. Outside, the bowling green is very popular along with Petanque, Mini-golf and Table Bowls. By next summer the Croquet Lawn will also be available. The residents enjoy an enviable resort style lifestyle. It is also surprisingly affordable. A former Christchurch resident, Judith, says “We couldn’t have all this for what we are paying if we were still in Christchurch.”

Another resident, David, says “my wife and I have never been so well off as we are now we moved to McKenzie Lifestyle Village.” There are fuller testimonials on the village homepage at mlv.co.nz. Geraldine is a great little town with a very pleasant microclimate. There is plenty to do in and around the town with art galleries, theatre and cinema, interesting shops and boutiques, two museums and a wide range of good places to eat. For the more adventurous there are river and forest walks nearby, opportunities for biking and a choice of two local golf clubs. For more information you can talk to David Connolly about this on 0800 84 55 24.

The importance of good blood pressure! According to a country Doctor “D.C. Jarvis” from Vermont in the USA cider vinegar and honey (CV & H) can be an important part of a long healthy life. Dr. Jarvis noted Vermonters who regularly consumed cider vinegar and honey had excellent health with many putting in a vigorous day’s work on the farm even when well into their eighties. Dr. Jarvis found the effects of cider vinegar and honey on arthritis can be remarkable with many patients reporting almost total relief after taking a course of the cider vinegar and honey. Dr. Jarvis surmised that the acid and potassium in cider vinegar counteracted calcium deposits and helped the body control calcium use. As well as a general tonic Dr. Jarvis found regular administration of cider vinegar and

honey at the onset of complaints such as the common cold, sinusitis, asthmatic attacks, hay fever, and childhood diseases such as chicken pox and measles, was accompanied by an improvement in the condition with symptoms either disappearing, or the conditions were extremely mild and soon over. Apple cider vinegar contains all the goodness of the apple in a form that is readily accepted by the body. Scientists have found over 90 different substances in ACV, among them 20 important trace elements, minerals, essential enzymes, a number of different acids including malic acid, amino acids and roughage in the form of potash and pectin. A scientific study at the Shizuka University in Japan has proven ACV to have potent antioxidant benefits (It

can destroy free radicals, which are a major factor in ageing.) and also the ACV can break down cholesterol formations in the blood vessels. ACV and H is a powerful tonic that also promotes digestion, assimilation of nutrients and elimination of waste, and helps neutralize any toxic substances that enter the body. It is important to note not all cider vinegar is made in the traditional way and results are likely to prove disappointing with these other vinegars. HOME & HEATING

Choosing the right heat pump for your home

Whether it be a new build, or a retrofit, most homes include at least one heat pump, if not a whole heating solution. They can provide cheap, clean heat and are much more convenient than a log burner as you just need to press a button. But how do you decide what is best? Choosing the right sized heat pump is key to ensuring optimum comfort levels. Every situation varies and it is therefore important to get professional advice from heat pump experts. The range varies from wall mounted high walls, floor mounted systems, multi systems, ceiling cassettes, right through to ducted central heating systems allowing you to have a very discreet way of heating your whole home to a constant temperature throughout. Firstly, you must select a heat pump that is suitable for the size of the space you wish to heat. Usually a site visit is the best way to ascertain this. Not only is the size of the area taken into consideration but also, insulation, building orientation, windows and ceiling space. There are a wide range of heat pumps available with different heating outputs so it is important to select the correct size for your requirements that will handle the job but not be unnecessarily overpowered. Secondly, the location of your heat pump is also extremely important. The cheapest installation is a back to back where the outdoor unit is positioned directly behind the indoor unit however this is not necessarily always the best option. It is vital that the indoor unit is positioned in a place that will not be

constantly blowing on you. Also important, is the location of the outdoor unit. Most people do not want their outdoor unit sitting directly in their outdoor entertaining area or right outside their bedroom window. Choose a brand you can trust. Many brands have come and gone over the years but there are a number of manufacturers who provide reputable and reliable products. All brands vary in their energy efficiency, quietness of systems and price, so it depends on your application as to which will be most suitable. Major brands such as Panasonic, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi, Daikin, Toshiba and Hitachi are all reliable brands backed up by good technical after sales service. Ensure your heat pump is installed by an accredited installer. This will not only ensure correct installation of your heat pump, but also validate the manufacturers warranty. Other things to consider when choosing a heat pump are time clocks, ease of use of the remote controllers, air filtration and also wifi capabilities. Heating is a major investment in your home and it is vital to get the right advice. Enviro Master Ltd specialise in the supply, installation and servicing of all major brands of heat pumps. Our salesmen are engineers ensuring you get quality, unbiased advice as to which system will suit your application the best. Enviro Master Ltd offer a free, no obligation quote and will come to your home to see what is required. Visit our website at www.enviromaster.co.nz.

The facts about home ventilation Balanced Pressure vs Positive Pressure Under the New Zealand Building Code, all buildings, including residential, need to be suitably ventilated, either with opening windows or forced ventilation. Clause G4.1 states: “The objective of this provision is to safeguard people from illness or loss of amenity due to lack of fresh air.” There are many benefits to forced, or mechanical, ventilation over opening windows, including warmth, security, reduction of outside noises and reduction of condensation. Traditional domestic ventilation systems are ‘positive pressure’. They bring air in from outside via the roof space and force the stale air out through gaps around windows and doors. The incoming air from these systems has to be heated or cooled to keep the house warm in winter or cool in summer. The Smooth-Air HEX390 is a ‘balanced pressure’ system. It extracts air from the house and at the same time brings in fresh air. These two streams of air pass through a heat exchanger, which warms incoming air in winter and cools in summer if air conditioning is being used. This means that up to 80% of the energy which would be

ve Remo ells ng sm i k o o c am! e t s d an

wasted using a traditional positive pressure system is recovered, resulting in significant energy savings and therefore lower heating or cooling costs. Until recently, balanced pressure ventilation systems have been considerably more expensive than traditional positive pressure systems. However, with Smooth-Air’s unique manufacturing capabilities, a HEX390 balanced pressure system can be installed for a similar price as a traditional positive pressure system. MULTI-talented New Zealand based singer, songwriter, guitarist and vocal coach, Stuart Clarke headlines alongside well known tribute star Paul Madsen in a Superstar Show at the Hornby WMC this Friday (23rd June). Presented by Madsen Promotions, the Superstar Show features Paul performing superstar tributes to the BeeGees, Eagles, Queen and Neil Diamond with Stuart completing the superstar lineup with Johnny Cash classics. Stuart has been involved in the New Zealand music scene for more than 20 years. During this time public performances have included Auckland’s Christmas in the Park (TV3), Tauranga Jazz Festival, Clevedon Jazz

Festival, Auckland Sky City Casino, and Rhythm and Vines. He has shared the stage with many national and international acts such as Trinity Roots, The Black Seeds, Hollie Smith, John Butler Trio, and Donovan Frankenwreiter. He has been nominated for a B-Net Music Award, as well as recording collaborations released on Warners Music. Blessed with a wonderfully rich bassbaritone voice comparable to Johnny Cash, Stuart performs the music of Johnny Cash to perfection. The Superstar Show takes place at the Hornby WMC this Friday 23 June 2017. Show starts at 8pm. Tickets $20 on sale at the club office, Carmen Rd, phone 349 9026.
